For more than 36 years, Michael Maglaras & Company has helped its clients cross the great divide between insurance and self-insurance. We have pioneered approaches to the transfer of risk for hospital systems, individual community hospital facilities, physician groups, health maintenance organizations, and others. These approaches, originating first within our firm, have now become the benchmark of excellence in the captive industry, supporting the risk financing and risk management programs of tax-exempt as well as taxable facilities.
Services
Michael Maglaras & Company is a division of A.E.M. Holdings, Ltd., and is an international insurance consulting firm specializing in providing insurance program consulting advice, including self-insurance feasibility testing and other alternatives to traditional insurance programs for a variety of health care and other clients.
Michael Maglaras & Company is the premiere underwriting manager for captive insurance programs sponsored by health care institutions, physician groups, and others in the health care business. For example, we create and establish disciplined underwriting programs insuring community-based medical staff members underwritten through a hospital-sponsored captive insurance company.
In the era of Accountable Care, where the management of increasingly larger populations is seen as the way to reduce health care expense and improve outcomes, hospital system merger and acquisition activity is on the rise. As systems merge, and as large physician groups attempting to stay independent also come together, hard choices have to be made about which existing captive insurers remain and which must go.
As a firm of independent consultants, we regularly appraise property and casualty insurance portfolios and certify the integrity of these portfolios for compliance with debt covenants and for reasons associated with regulation. We also provide insurance program analysis and commentary, which includes written work product aimed at improving asset protection and the streamlining of complex property and casualty insurance programs.
