In 1910, the corporate name was changed to Sterling Fire Insurance Company in recognition of the geographic expansion of operations. The present title, Sterling Insurance Company was adopted in 1959, to reflect the company's expansion into other lines of business, particularly casualty. In 1989, the company began writing personal automobile policies.

The company offices have always been located in Cobleskill and were originally located in the Ryder, LeFevre and Company building. Today the company operates from its facility on Barnerville Road.

As a mutual company located in upstate New York, we are owned by our policy holders versus stockholders. Consequently, we are not accountable to "Wall Street", we are accountable to "Main Street" where our policyholders live and work, just as we do.

Sterling Insurance Group believes strongly in giving back to our local communities and regularly donates to a number of charitable organizations. Our contributions and volunteer efforts help create a stronger and healthier environment for our policyholders and employees to work and live. The Sterling Insurance Company Foundation was created in late 2013.
